The Design and Build Process
At Backyard Creations, we take pride in our work and understand this is an important investment for our customers.  We are a not a franchise or national chain.  Our company is a Birmingham-based owned and operated with direct owner involvement in each, and every job.  Our number one goal is to ensure that each customer is satisfied with a high-quality product that you will enjoy while enhancing the value of your backyard.
The timeframe to complete your project is highly dependent on the scope of your project and custom features.  Typically, we are able to complete most projects in a 3-4 month timeframe from start to finish.  Absent of challenges that are out of our control, such as weather delays and/or any supply chain challenges, we aim to beat that timeframe.  The process to complete the project will consist of several key steps, with communication and multiple inspection points along the way.  We have outlined these key steps of the building process for you below:
  1. Design Consultation and Site Survey:  The first step is to meet with you to understand your goals and what you are looking for in your backyard project.  We would like to complete an on-site, free site survey and design consultation.  During this step we will also take time to review each step of the building process and timeline with you.
  2. Define the Project Scope:  As part of the in-take process, we want to work with you to design the best swimming pool design that complements your home and meets your need and purpose.   We will work with you to design your pool and any custom features or characteristics you desire.  The intake process will enable us to gather the information needed to input into our 3D design software, which will provide a realistic view of your design ideas of your pool and custom features as it sits on your actual property.  We pride ourselves at being able to make your vision become a reality.  All aspects, including size, shape, depth and desired characteristics are fully customizable.
  3. Design Center Selections: Approximately one month prior to excavation we will coordinate a date to visit our Design Center, where you will select the stone for coping/decking, waterline tile and plaster color.  We have many samples available to choose from to best match the characteristics of your home and/or the features of your choice.
  4. Pool Layout and Set Elevations:  Prior to excavation, we will mark out the pool perimeter and any custom features in your yard to ensure proper placement and set elevations.  This will also provide a visual for you to picture how and where it is positioned in your yard.  If any adjustments are needed, this is the time to do so prior to commencing with the dig.
  5. Excavation:  We excavate our own pools in-house.  We will dig based on your customized, agreed to specifications (size, shape, depth).   Digging can typically takes one day but may take up to 3 to 4 days depending on size, depth, soil quality and/or presence of rock can impact the length of time to complete the dig process.
  6. Form and Base:   After excavation, we build the forms to lay out the proper, customized shape of your pool.  Furthermore, we take many steps to ensure weather, grade or other factors will not compromise the integrity of your pool.  We add stone to the bottom of every pool, as well as hydrostat plugs should you ever need to drain your pool.
  7. Build the Cage:  The entire pool is caged in 3/8” and ½” rebar, tied on 10” centers.  Many pool companies use less support structure to save on costs.  We believe in “over-engineering” to ensure a solid structure with maximum strength to accommodate and handle weather, grade and other external factors for the long-term.
  8. Plumbing Installation:  We do all of our own plumbing and installation, including testing for leaks throughout the build process.
  9. Shoot the shell:  We will “shoot” your pool using the highest quality concrete (shotcrete) which cures to the highest and strongest psi for a long-lasting pool.
  10. Coping and Tile:  Based on your selections chosen in the Design Center, we will install your 6”x6” waterline tile, as well as the individually cut 1’ flagstone coping around the perimeter of the pool, creating an elegant, customized look to your pool.
  11. Backfill and Grounding:  Once the pool is shot and has coping and tile installed, we backfill around the pool with gravel to create a base for which we can pour the solid decking.  The grounding is completed at this time to ensure safety and protect people from the pool from any electrical system issues.  The grounding grid is inspected and approved at this point by the proper authority to ensure it is safe.
  12. Decking:  We install 5” of gravel under the concrete deck to allow for proper drainage and flexibility throughout the various temperature and weather changes during the year.  There are many options to choose from for your pool deck.  Unless otherwise specified, we provide a “salt finish” concrete decking which is both affordable and provides a high-quality look.  This finish is also good for minimal slippage and does not overheat like many surfaces.  Of course, if desired, we also have some of the best stone installers in the business that are fully capable of installing full stone decking and/or other design.
  13. Equipment and Electrical Install:  Once we set out the equipment in the desired location, our licensed electrician will hook up and install the pump, filtration system and any other selected equipment as needed to have your pool operational upon completion.
  14. Plaster:  The final step of the build process is the plaster, which is the finish coat on the inside of the pool.  We will use your selected plaster color to provide a nice smooth finish.  Once applied, we will fill your pool up and help prepare the water chemistry to get you ready to swim!

Upon Completion…
Upon completion of the project, Backyard Creations will turn over your pool to you by providing Pool School by one of our certified technicians.  We believe it is critical to provide the proper education and handover of pool maintenance and service upkeep for your pool/spa.  Pool school topics will include pool care basics such as:
  • Pool chemistry levels and how to maintain and enjoy a clear pool with little effort
  • Basic pool care schedule
  • Basic troubleshooting
At this time we will also provide you with the tools to help maintain your pool, including water test kit and tools (cam pole, brush, leaf net, vacuum hose and head, start-up chemicals).
