How Saltwater Pools Actually Work
Despite what many people think, saltwater pools still use chlorine. The difference is that a saltwater chlorinator (also called a salt cell) converts dissolved salt in the water into chlorine automatically. Instead of adding chlorine manually, the system generates it continuously at a low, consistent level.
The salt level in a saltwater pool is about 3,000 ppm — far lower than ocean water (35,000 ppm) and barely detectable to most swimmers.
Pros of Saltwater Pools
Softer water feel — many swimmers prefer the silkier feel of saltwater. Less irritation to eyes and skin. Lower ongoing chemical costs once the system is installed. More consistent chlorine levels with less manual effort.
Cons of Saltwater Pools
Higher upfront cost — a quality salt chlorinator adds $1,500–$3,000 to your equipment package. Salt cells need to be replaced every 3–7 years ($300–$700). Salt can be corrosive to certain pool equipment, fixtures, and nearby landscaping if not managed properly.
Pros of Traditional Chlorine Pools
Lower upfront equipment cost. Simpler system with fewer components that can fail. Easier to shock the pool quickly when needed. Widely understood by pool service technicians everywhere.
Cons of Traditional Chlorine Pools
Requires more hands-on chemical management. Chlorine levels can fluctuate more, especially in hot Alabama summers. Buying and storing chlorine adds ongoing cost and effort.
Which Should You Choose?
For most homeowners in Alabama and Florida, we lean toward recommending saltwater — especially if you swim frequently. The softer water feel, reduced chemical handling, and consistent sanitization are worth the upfront investment for active pool users.
If you have a tight budget or prefer a simpler system, a well-maintained chlorine pool works just as well. The most important factor is consistent water chemistry management regardless of which system you choose.
