Building a pool is exciting — but going in informed makes the whole process smoother. Here's what we wish every customer knew before we started.
▎ 1. The permit process takes time
▎ Before any digging starts, permits need to be pulled from your city or county. This typically takes 2–4 weeks. A reputable builder handles all of this for you — but factor it into your timeline.
▎ 2. Terrain affects everything
▎ Rocky ground, slopes, and drainage all impact cost and timeline. A sloped backyard isn't a dealbreaker — we've built beautiful pools on challenging terrain — but it does require more planning and excavation work.
▎ 3. The build takes 8–14 weeks on average
▎ From breaking ground to your first swim, most pools take 2–3 months. Weather delays happen. A good contractor will keep you updated every step of the way.
▎ 4. Add-ons are easier to include now than later
▎ Want a spa, tanning ledge, or waterfall? Add it during the design phase. Retrofitting features after the pool is built costs significantly more. Think through everything you might want upfront.
▎ 5. Who you hire matters more than anything else
▎ Price is important, but it's not the only thing. Ask how long the company has been in business, look at their past work, and read real customer reviews. A pool is a 20–30-year investment — the cheapest bid isn't always the best
value.
